Introspection is a habit of inward self-examination, of thinking and rehashing without true healthy consideration. It is the exercise of looking inward to find truth. Introspection involves the rational mind in a very narcissistic way but also the receptive mind, emotions, desires and will. When involved in introspection, we are constantly pre-occupied in our minds, thinking and re-thinking the past, old conversations and events, looking within ourselves for answers, imagining how it could have been different. Or we are projecting into the future in an attempt to make it safer. But we are too subjective to think well in the isolation of self. We are created for dialogue with God and with others, but introspection isolates us in a lonely monologue. It is simply, quite destructive to our rational mind and to our heart. And it can be very seductive and dangerous, developing into a stronghold where the demonic hides. To turn in “severely on the self … in lonely isolation from God and other selves invites demonic participation at some point.” Payne, The Healing Presence, p. 186).
