Appetites are the connectors between the soul and the body. Our bodies experience sensation from the sensory organs of the eyes, ears, skin, nose and mouth and these gives us our perceptions of vision, hearing, touch, spatial orientation, smell and taste. Appetites engage all of these bodily senses and are the energy of the body transferred into need: hunger, thirst, rest, sexual drives, exercise and touch. These are legitimate needs, interconnected with our thoughts and emotions and desires, that help us survive and thrive, express and enjoy life, connect with others and take care of ourselves in healthy ways. Appetites are like power supplies of energy that propel us forward. We have tremendous “potential energy” in our bodies that is “directly accessible” to use (Dallas Willard, Renovation of the Heart, p. 160-161).
